Fun Central Iowa Family Events
for this coming weekend: October 27-31, 2022
It's that time of year again! The leaves are changing color, the air is getting cooler, and Halloween is just around the corner. If you're looking for some fun things to do with your family this weekend, look no further than central Iowa. Here are some great events happening from October 27-31, 2022.
October 27-30 | Night Eyes at Blank Park Zoo
5 pm. to 9 p.m.
Cost: starting at $6
Roam through enchanted lighting displays, a merry-not-scary treat safari, and enjoy live entertainment and games, all while learning more about and supporting wildlife. Advance ticket purchase suggested.
October 27 | Halloween Trick or Treat, Outlets of Des Moines
5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Custom Dreamz Car Club will feature special “trunk” candy giveaways for trick-or-treaters. Bring personal hygiene items and/or canned foods for donation to the Caring Hands Outreach Center.
October 29 | Spooky Spider with Jester Park Nature Center
10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Cost: Free
Spiders and Halloween go hand and hand. Get to know these fascinating animals, including their unique adaptations and the vital role they play in ecosystems. You’ll even get to meet the Jester Park Nature Center’s resident spider. Registration required.
October 29 | GPS Great Pumpkin Hunt at Greenwood Park
10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Cost: $10
Participants will learn how to use a hand-held Global Positioning Unit and then will use the GPS to find the “GreatPumpkin” in the park. A series of smaller pumpkins will be hidden in the park and leading the way to “the Great Pumpkin.”
October 30 | Spooktacular Trees Halloween Drive-Through at The Brenton Arboretum
1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Cost: $5/car, $20/ 10 – 12 passenger van
During this daytime drive-through event, you’ll creep through the Spooktacular trees to view delightfully spooky scenes crafted by local businesses, clubs, and organizations with scenic fall vistas in between.
October 30 | Teen Trick-or-Treat Trivia at the Waukee Library
1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Cost: Free
Teens in grades 6 -12 will team up and prove who has the greatest brain. Categories include Animated Halloween Classics, Hocus Pocus, Scary Movies, and random Halloween and fall harvest facts. Snacks will be provided. Registration is required.
October 30 | Trunk Or Treat, Kinship Brewing Company
A safe and friendly event for everyone, including kids and dogs. The entire parking lot will be blocked off so that there are no moving cars. Enjoy food trucks, a bounce house, photo ops, games, and activities for everyone!
October 30 | Costume Hike and Pumpkin Party, Walnut Woods State Park
10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Put on your costumes and head to Walnut Woods for a morning of fun. Kids can participate in a variety of activities near the playground at Walnut Woods, and families are welcome to join on a ~1-mile-long group hike at 10:30 or 11:30. Kids will receive non-candy goodies while playing games and having fun.
October 31 | Halloween on the Hill in the Sherman Hill Neighborhood
6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Cost: Free, suggested donation of non-perishable food
The residents of Sherman Hill are decorating their historic homes with spooky scenes and collecting non-perishable food items for the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry. Halloween on the Hill has become one of the “must-do” events on Halloween night in Des Moines!
October 31 | Valley Junction Pumpkin Walk
2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Cost: Free
Join the Halloween fun as children show off their costumes and travel through Historic Valley Junction. Trick-or-treating, free pumpkins (while supplies last), balloons and bubbles, and hayrack rides.
Whether you’re looking for some outdoor fun or wanting to find a safe and socially-distant way to celebrate Halloween, central Iowa has got you covered.
